The Off-Broadway return of Bess Wohl’s Small Mouth Sounds, directed by Rachel Chaikin is on July 3rd. The play about a group of urbanites struggling to find quiet and peace of mind, was originally produced by Ars Nova last year and played a sold-out, twice-extended run.
Zoë Winters (Monica Simons), Obie winner Quincy Tyler Bernstine (Ruined), Zoë Winters (Red Speedo), Max Baker (The Village Bike), Carmen Zilles (Scenes from a Marriage) and James Seol (Around the World in 80 Days) complete the cast, joining the previously announced Marcia DeBonis (Homeland), Jojo Gonzalez (The Romance of Magno Rubio), Brad Heberlee (These Paper Bullets) and Babak Tafti (The North Pool). Bernstine replaces Sakina Jaffrey, who had to depart the production due to scheduling conflicts.
Performances will run July 3-September 25 in The Romulus Linney Courtyard Theatre at The Pershing Square Signature Center. An official opening night is set for July 13.
“In the overwhelming quiet of the woods, six runaways from city life embark on a silent retreat,” state press notes. “As these strangers confront internal demons both profound and absurd, their vows of silence collide with the achingly human need to connect. Filled with awkward humor, this strange and compassionate new play asks how we address life’s biggest questions when words fail us.”
