Take Me Out revival at Second Stage in 2019-2020

From Broadway.com:

“Batter up! Take Me Out, Richard Greenberg’s Tony-winning play about a Major League Baseball player who comes out of the closet, will be revived on Broadway as part of Second Stage’s 2019-2020 season. The new production will be joined by two more Broadway plays at the Hayes Theater, in addition to three off-Broadway world premieres produced by the not-for-profit.

This staging of Take Me Out will mark the first Broadway revival of Greenberg’s groundbreaking 2003 play, which follows Darren Lemming, star center fielder for the Empires, who reveals he is gay and faces a barrage of long-held unspoken prejudices. Facing some hostile teammates and fraught friendships, Darren is forced to contend with the challenges of being a gay person of color within the confines of a classic American institution. As the Empires struggle to rally toward a championship season, the players and their fans begin to question tradition, their loyalties and the price of victory. Scott Ellis will direct the revival, set to begin previews on March 31, 2020 and open on April 23. Casting will be announced at a later date.”

So, any casting dreams? I think Alfredo Narciso would be excellent in one of the parts.

  1. Bummed we have to wait a whole year but glad they are finally reviving it – let’s hope they dont do something stupid and introduce a shower partition or frosted glass to the set! The same theater is also putting on the NY premiere of Linda Vista in the fall. There is apparently a lot of nudity from the lead in that play as well.

  2. My feelings exactly. I’ve seen so many botched versions of this play and hope the current censorship trend does not ruin this production.

  3. The announcement at the Second Stage website indicates nudity. After the much ballyhooed nudity from the original staging and many of the regional productions, it would be pretty wimpy and unimpressive to censor it in any way now. Plus I could see it cutting into the box office significantly and I doubt that is what they want.

    1. Disappointed Jussie went crazy and faked a hate crime for…reasons that are still not clear. Would have loved to see him in all his glory as Darren. I assume Zachary Quinto would play the role of Mason, the accountant (which won Denis O’Hare the Tony) though would rather him play Kippy and jump in the shower with the rest!

  4. I would also bet that Quinto will probably play Mason. Getting wet, however, just thinking about him as Kippy…….
